Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-015035

  1. 1. A variation of an element that has the same atomic number of protons but a different weight because of the number of neutrons. Various isotopes of the same element may have different radioactive behaviors, some are highly unstable.

    2. A form of an element that has the same atomic number (same number of protons), but a different atomic mass due to a different number of neutrons.

    3. Form of an element that has the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons in the nucleus, giving it a different atomic mass. For example, uranium has thirty-seven different isotopes, including uranium-235 and uranium-238.

  2. Atoms of the same element that have the same atomic number, but a different mass number; unstable isotopes are radioactive and decay to become stable isotopes.
