Kilowatt hour

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-015162

  1. 1. A kilowatt hour is a metric unit of energy most often used to measure electricity use.

    2. A unit of work or energy equal to that expended by one kilowatt in one hour or to 3.6 million joules. A unit of work or energy equal to that expended by one kilowatt in one hour (1.341 horsepower-hours).

  2. 1. A unit for measuring the use of electricity. The cost of an electric bill depends on how many kilowatt-hours the customer used. A microwave or toaster running for an hour will use about 1 kilowatt-hour.

    2. A kilowatt-hour (kWh) is a standard metric unit of measurement for electricity. (1) One kilowatt-hour (kW) is equal to 1,000 watt-hours (Wh). (2) A watt-hour is the amount of energy delivered at a rate of one watt (W) for a period of one hour. (3) One watt is the amount of power rate of one joule of work per second of time. (4) Example: A 100 watt light bulb in use for 10 hours uses 1000 watt-hours, or 1 kilowatt of electricity. (100 watts x 10 hours = 1000 watt-hours = 1 kWh)
