Laboratory fortified sample matrix

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-015232

  1. 1. An aliquot of a preserved environmental field sample to which known quantities of the method analytes are added in the laboratory. The LFSM is processed and analyzed exactly like a sample, and its purpose is to determine whether the sample matrix contributes bias to the analytical results. The background concentrations of the analytes in the sample matrix must be determined in a separate aliquot and the measured values in the LFSM corrected for background concentrations. {OW/TSC}

    2. An aliquot of a preserved environmental field sample to which known quantities of the method analytes are added in the laboratory. The LFSM is processed and analyzed exactly like a sample, and its purpose is to determine whether the sample matrix contributes bias to the analytical results. The background concentrations of the analytes in the sample matrix must be determined in a separate aliquot and the measured values in the LFSM corrected for background concentrations.

  2. (radiochemistry) A second aliquot of a field sample that has a known quantity of the radionuclide(s) being measured added to it. The LFSM is prepared and analyzed and results calculated in exactly the same manner as the samples in the preparation batch. Its purpose is to determine whether the sample matrix contributes bias to the results. The native level of the radionuclide(s) must be determined in an unspiked field sample aliquot in order to correct for levels already present in a sample that could contribute to the LFSM response. {OW/TSC}
