Matrix Spike
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-016688
1. Aliquot of a matrix (water or soil) fortified (spiked) with known quantities of specific compounds and subjected to the entire analytical procedure in order to indicate the appropriateness of the method for the matrix by measuring recovery.
2. A sample prepared by adding a known mass of target analyte to a specified amount of matrix sample for which an independent estimate of target analyte concentration is available. Matrix spikes are used, for example, to determine the effect of the matrix on a method's recovery efficiency. (ORD)
3. A sample used for quality control in which a known amount of the target analyte is added to a specified amount of matrix. These samples can be used to evaluate the effect of the matrix on the recovery efficiency and performance of a method.
