Leaking Underground Storage Tank

1. A underground storage tank is a tank and any underground piping connected to the tank that is used to contain gasoline or other petroleum products or chemical solutions and that is placed in such a manner that at least 10 percent of its combined volume is underground. Leaking means that the contents are escaping from the tank and contaminating the environment.
2. A leaking tank and any underground piping connected to the tank that has at least 10 percent of its combined volume underground. Under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), EPA has established regulatory programs to prevent, detect, and clean up releases from USTs containing petroleum or hazardous substances.
