Underground storage tank

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-029058

  1. 1. A tank and any underground piping connected to the tank that has 10% or more of its volume (including pipe volume) beneath the surface of the ground. USTs are designed to hold gasoline, other petroleum products, and hazardous materials.

    2. A UST is a tank and any underground piping connected to the tank that is used to contain gasoline or other petroleum products or chemical solutions and that is placed in such a manner that at least 10 percent of its combined volume is underground.

    3. A tank that is completely covered with soil, situated below the natural grade of the land.

    4. An underground tank storing hazardous substances or petroleum products.

    5. A tank located at least partially underground and designed to hold gasoline or other petroleum products or chemicals.

    6. See http://www.epa.gov/swerust1/. An underground storage tank system (UST) is a tank and any underground piping connected to the tank that has at least 10 percent of its combined volume underground. Under RCRA, EPA has established regulatory programs to prevent, detect, and clean up releases from USTs containing petroleum or hazardous substances.

    7. Any one or combination of tanks (including underground pipes connected thereto) that is used to contain an accumulation of regulated substances, and the volume of which (including the volume of underground pipes connected thereto) is 10 percent or more beneath the surface of the ground. This term does not include any: (1) Farm or residential tank of 1,100 gallons or less capacity used for storing motor fuel for noncommercial purposes; (2) Tank used for storing heating oil for consumptive use on the premises where stored; (3) Septic tank; (4) Pipeline facility (including gathering lines): (i) Which is regulated under 49 U.S.C. chapter 601; or (ii) Which is an intrastate pipeline facility regulated under state laws as provided in 49 U.S.C. chapter 601, and which is determined by the Secretary of Transportation to be connected to a pipeline, or to be operated or intended to be capable of operating at pipeline pressure or as an integral part of a pipeline; (5) Surface impoundment, pit, pond, or lagoon; (6) Storm water or wastewater collection system; (7) Flow-through process tank; (8) Liquid trap or associated gathering lines directly related to oil or gas production and gathering operations; or (9) Storage tank situated in an underground area (such as a basement, cellar, mineworking, drift, shaft, or tunnel) if the storage tank is situated upon or above the surface of the floor. Note to the definition of Underground storage tank or UST. The term underground storage tank or UST does not include any pipes connected to any tank which is described in paragraphs (1) through (9) of this definition.

  2. 1. A tank and any underground piping connected to the tank that is used to contain an accumulation of regulated substances and that has at least 10 percent of its combined volume underground.

    2. A tank and any underground piping connected to the tank that has 10% or more of its volume (including pipe volume) beneath the surface of the ground. USTs are designed to hold gasoline, other petroleum products, and hazardous materials.

    3. The environmental burden indicator for UST measures how many underground storage tanks and UST release sites are near where people live. This indicator is based on the sum of LUSTs and USTs within a 1,500-foot buffered block group. EJScreen presents this relative density of USTs using percentile rank, ranging from 0 (lowest) to 100 (highest).

    4. For more details on the UST indicator, including why it is important and what you can do moving forward, please visit the EJScreen Indicator Overview for UST.
