1. Use of mathematical equations to simulate and predict real events and processes.
2. "Development of a mathematical or physical representation of a system or theory that accounts for all or some of its known properties. Models are often used to test the effect of changes of components on the overall performance of the system" (EPA 1992, 18).
3. An investigative technique using a mathematical or physical representation of a system or theory that accounts for all or some of its known properties.
4. The development and use of a non-unique, simplified description of the physical system, which may be mathematical and coded in computer programming language or physical, such as the development of physical models or the use of model organisms. [based on ANSI/ASQ E4-2004 Quality systems for environmental data and technology programs - Requirements with guidance for use].
5. An investigative technique using a mathematical or physical representation of a system or theory that accounts for all or some of its known properties. [EPA 2004]
