1. The property of a chemical that causes the genetic characteristics of an organism to change in such a way that future generations are permanently affected.
2. The capacity of a chemical or physical agent to cause permanent alteration of the genetic material within living cells.
3. Mutagenicity is the capacity of a chemical or physical agent to cause such permanent changes.
