Petroleum coke

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-020794

1. A residue that is the final product of the condensation process in cracking.

2. Also known as “petcoke,” means a carbonization product of high-boiling hydrocarbon fractions obtained in petroleum processing (heavy residues). Petroleum coke is typically derived from oil refinery coker units or other cracking processes.[40 CFR 60.41a (CFR 2013)]

3. Black solid residue, obtained mainly by cracking and carbonizing of petroleum derived feedstocks, vacuum bottoms, tar and pitches in processes such as delayed coking or fluid coking. It consists mainly of carbon (90 to 95 percent), has low ash content, and may be used as a feedstock in coke ovens. This product is also known as marketable coke or catalyst coke. [40 CFR 98.6 (CFR 2013)]
