Radioactive Waste

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-023014

1. Any waste that emits energy as rays, waves, or streams of energetic particles. Radioactive materials are often mixed with hazardous waste, usually from nuclear reactors, research institutions, or hospitals.

2. Radioactive waste is any waste that emits energy as rays, waves, or streams of energetic particles. Sources of such wastes include nuclear reactors, research institutions, and hospitals.

3. Any waste that emits energy as rays, waves, streams or energetic particles. Radioactive materials are often mixed with hazardous waste, from nuclear reactors, research institutions, or hospitals.

4. Waste containing substances that emit ionizing radiation. Radioactive waste is classified by regulation according to its source and/or content. The types of waste that are typically considered “radioactive waste” include high-level waste, low-level waste, mixed low-level waste, transuranic waste (i.e., elements heavier than uranium), and certain wastes from the extraction and processing of uranium or thorium ore. Spent nuclear fuel, which is produced as a result of the controlled nuclear fission process in nuclear reactors, is considered a nuclear material rather than radioactive waste.

5. Radioactive waste, radioactive material and coincidental material subject to the requirements of part 191 of this chapter.

6. As used in this subpart, means any spent nuclear fuel or radioactive waste isolated in a disposal system.

7. As used in this part, means the high-level and transuranic radioactive waste covered by this part.

8. Any waste which contains radioactive material in concentrations which exceed those listed in 10 CFR part 20, appendix B, table II column 2.[40 CFR 146.3 (CFR 2018)]

9. Any radioactive material emplaced for disposal into the Yucca Mountain repository
