Removal Action

1. CERCLA defines a removal action in part as "the cleanup or removal of hazardous substances from the environment...which may be taken in the event of the threat of release of hazardous substances into the environment." See also Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act.

2. Short-term immediate actions taken to address releases of hazardous substances that require expedited response. (See: cleanup.)

3. Short-term immediate actions that address releases of hazardous substances that require expedited responses.

4. Short-term immediate actions taken to address releases of hazardous substances that require expedited response.

5. Short-term cleanup action taken under CERCLA that usually addresses problems only at the surface of a site. A removal is conducted in response to an emergency and generally is limited to 12 months duration or $2 million in expenditures.

6. Action that removes hazardous substances from the site for proper disposal or destruction in a facility permitted under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act or the Toxic Substances Control Act or by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

7. Actions in a short-term cleanup intended to stabilize or clean up a site that poses an imminent and substantial threat to human health or the environment. Removals can occur at any stage of the Superfund cleanup process, but are often the first response upon discovery of a hazardous substance at a site.
