Representativeness

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-023924

1. The measure of the degree to which data accurately and precisely represent a characteristic of a population, parameter variations at a sampling point, a process condition, or an environmental condition.

2. The degree to which the data collected accurately represents the population of interest.

3. The degree to which a sample is, or samples are, characteristic of the whole medium, exposure, or dose for which the samples are being used to make inferences.

4. "The degree to which data accurately and precisely represent the frequency distribution of a specific variable in the population; a data quality indicator" (QAMS 1993, 20).

5. The degree to which a sample is, or samples are, characteristic of the whole medium, exposure, or dose for which the samples are being used to make inferences. [EPA 1997a]

6. The property of a sample (set of observations) that they are characteristic of the system from which they are a sample or which they are intended to represent, and thus appropriate to use as the basis for making inferences. A representative sample is one that is free of unacceptably large bias with respect to a particular data quality objective. [FAO/WHO 2003b]

7. Degree to which data accurately and precisely represent a characteristic of a population, a parameter variation at a sampling point, a process condition, or an environmental condition. A data quality indicator. [EPA 240/R-02/005; QA Glossary]

8. The degree to which data accurately and precisely represent a characteristic of a population, a parameter variation at a sampling point, a process condition, or an environmental condition. A data quality indicator.
