1. For plants and animals, the ability to withstand poor environmental conditions or attacks by chemicals or disease. May be inborn or acquired.
2. In a body subject to infection, the sum total of body mechanisms that interpose barriers to the invasion or multiplication of infectious agents or to damage by their toxic products.
