1. A general term indicating the recording of vertical measurements. Commonly used to describe vertical measurements collected with geophysical methods and cone penetrometer testing.
2. In geophysics, a survey method whereby the geometry and/or frequency of an array of sensors is varied so as to measure the physical properties of the earth as a function of depth beneath the configuration. The alternative is usually profiling.
