Storage tank

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-026867

1. A reservoir intended to hold stormwater, combined, sanitary, or industrial wastewater when temporary storage of the fluid is needed, typically when the flowrate or volume of flow from an event exceeds the carrying capacity of a pipe, channel, system, or treatment facility, or an allowable flowrate or total volume into a receiving water body is exceeded.

2. Tank or other vessel that is used to store organic liquids that contain one or more HAP as raw material feedstocks. Storage tank also means a tank or other vessel in a tank farm that receives and accumulates used solvent from multiple batches of a process or processes for purposes of solvent recovery. The following are not considered storage tanks for the purposes of this subpart:(1) Vessels permanently attached to motor vehicles such as trucks, railcars, barges, or ships;(2) Pressure vessels designed to operate in excess of 204.9 kilopascals and without emissions to the atmosphere;(3) Vessels storing organic liquids that contain HAP only as impurities;(4) Wastewater storage tanks; and(5) Process tanks (including product tanks and isolated intermediate tanks).

3. Stationary unit that is constructed primarily of nonearthen materials (such as wood, concrete, steel, or reinforced plastic) that provide structural support and is designed to hold a bulk quantity of liquid. Storage tanks do not include:(1) Units permanently attached to conveyances such as trucks, trailers, rail cars, barges, or ships;(2) Pressure vessels designed to operate in excess of 204.9 kilopascals and without emissions to the atmosphere;(3) Bottoms receivers;(4) Surge control vessels;(5) Vessels storing wastewater; or(6) Reactor vessels associated with a manufacturing process unit.

4. Tank or other vessel that is used to store liquids that contain organic HAP and/or hydrogen halide and halogen HAP and that has been assigned to an MCPU according to the procedures in § 63.2435(d). The following are not considered storage tanks for the purposes of this subpart:(1) Vessels permanently attached to motor vehicles such as trucks, railcars, barges, or ships;(2) Pressure vessels designed to operate in excess of 204.9 kilopascals and without emissions to the atmosphere;(3) Vessels storing organic liquids that contain HAP only as impurities;(4) Wastewater storage tanks;(5) Bottoms receivers;(6) Surge control vessels; and(7) Process tanks.

5. Tank or other vessel that is used to store liquids that contain organic HAP and that are part of a CMPU subject to this subpart VVVVVV. The following are not considered storage tanks for the purposes of this subpart:(1) Vessels permanently attached to motor vehicles such as trucks, railcars, barges, or ships;(2) Pressure vessels designed to operate in excess of 204.9 kilopascals (kPa) and without emissions to the atmosphere;(3) Process tanks;(4) Tanks storing organic liquids containing HAP only as impurities;(5) Surge control vessels;(6) Bottoms receivers; and(7) Wastewater storage tanks.

6. For the purposes of regulation under the storage vessel provisions of this subpart, means a stationary unit that is constructed primarily of nonearthen materials (such as wood, concrete, steel, fiberglass, or plastic) that provides structural support and is designed to hold an accumulation of liquids or other materials. Storage vessel includes surge control vessels and bottoms receiver vessels. For the purposes of regulation under the storage vessel provisions of this subpart, storage vessel does not include vessels permanently attached to motor vehicles such as trucks, railcars, barges, or ships; pressure vessels designed to operate in excess of 204.9 kilopascals and without emissions to the atmosphere; or wastewater storage vessels. Wastewater storage vessels are covered under the wastewater provisions of § 63.1106.

7. Tank or other vessel that is used to store liquids that contain one or more HAP compounds.

8. A concrete or metal tank designed to store manure and wastewater until it can be utilized. Storage tanks are not designed to treat manure.
