Stratification
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-026921
1. Layering or bedding of geologic materials (e.g., rock, sediments).
2. Separating into layers.
3. The formation of separate layers (of temperature, plant, or animal life) in a lake or reservoir. Each layer has similar characteristics such as all water in the layer has the same temperature.
4. The division of warmer, lighter fresh water over a layer of saltier and denser water in the Bay. Stratification of the two layers varies within any season depending on rainfall.
5. Layering or bedding of geologic materials (e.g., rock or sediments).
6. The formation of separate layers (of temperature, salinity, plant, or animal life) in a water body. Each layer has similar characteristics such as all water in the layer has the same temperature.
( of Waterbody) Formation of water layers each with specific physical, chemical, and biological characteristics. As the density of water decreases due to surface heating, a stable situation develops with lighter water overlaying heavier and denser water.
