Wastewater

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-029993

1. The spent or used water from a home, community, farm, or industry that contains dissolved or suspended matter.

2. Wastewater is spent or used water from an individual home, a community, a farm, or an industry that contains dissolved or suspended matter.

3. Usually refers to effluent from a sewage treatment plant. See also domestic wastewater.

4. The used water and solids from a community (including used water from industrial processes) that flow to a treatment plant. Storm water, surface water, and ground-water infiltration also may be included in the wastewater that enters a wastewater treatment plant. The term, sewage usually refers to household wastes, but this word is being replaced by the term, wastewater.

5. Water that has been used in homes, industries and businesses that is not reuseable unless treated by a wastewater facility.

6. Wastes that contain less than 1% by weight total organic carbon (TOC) and less than 1% by weight total suspended solids (TSS).

7. Water that has been used and contains dissolved or suspended waste materials.

8. Flowback and produced water, where flowback is the fluid returned to the surface after hydraulic fracturing has occurred but before the well is placed into production, and produced water is the fluid returned to the surface after the well has been placed into production.

9. Water that has been used and contains dissolved or suspended waste materials. See sewage treatment.

10. Water that has been used in homes, industries, and businesses that is not for reuse unless it is treated.

11. Either a process wastewater or a maintenance wastewater and means water that:(1) Contains either:(i) An annual average concentration of Table 9 compounds (as defined under this subpart) of at least 5 parts per million by weight at the point of determination and has an annual average flow rate of 0.02 liter per minute or greater, or(ii) An annual average concentration of Table 9 compounds (as defined under this subpart) of at least 10,000 parts per million by weight at the point of determination at any flow rate, and that(2) Is discarded from a process unit, whose primary product is a product produced by a source category subject to this subpart.

12. Either a process wastewater or maintenance wastewater and means water that:(1) Contains either:(i) An annual average concentration of organic HAP, as indicated on Table 2 of this subpart, of at least 5 parts per million by weight and has an annual average flow rate of 0.02 liter per minute or greater; or(ii) An annual average concentration of organic HAP, as indicated on Table 2 of this subpart, of at least 10,000 parts per million by weight at any flow rate.(2) Is discarded from an APPU that is part of an affected source.(3) Does not include:(i) Stormwater from segregated sewers;(ii) Water from fire-fighting and deluge systems in segregated sewers;(iii) Spills;(iv) Water from safety showers;(v) Water from testing of deluge systems; and(vi) Water from testing of firefighting systems.

13. Any portion of an individual wastewater stream or any aggregation of wastewater streams.

14. Water that meets either of the conditions described in paragraph (1) or (2) of this definition and is discarded from a PAI process unit that is at an affected source:(1) Is generated from a PAI process or a scrubber used to control emissions from a PAI process and contains either:(i) An annual average concentration of compounds in Table 9 of subpart G of this part of at least 5 ppmw and has an average flow rate of 0.02 L/min or greater; or(ii) An annual average concentration of compounds in Table 9 of subpart G of this part of at least 10,000 ppmw at any flow rate; (2) Is generated from a PAI process unit as a result of maintenance activities and contains at least 5.3 Mg of compounds listed in Table 9 of subpart G of this part per individual discharge event.
