Against the grain

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-000118

To cut or plane a piece of wood in a direction opposing the natural orientation of its fibers. This action can cause the wood fibers to lift, tear, and splinter, resulting in a rough, damaged surface rather than a smooth finish. For best results, cutting tools like planes and chisels are always moved parallel to the grain direction, a process known as working with the grain.
