Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-003991

Describing a cut or orientation made at a 45-degree angle to the warp and weft threads of a woven fabric or the grain of a composite material. This orientation allows the material to drape and stretch more than it would if cut along the straight grain. Cutting on the bias is a standard technique for creating garments that conform to body curves and for manufacturing flexible fabric-reinforced hoses.
