Long-grain

The surface of a piece of wood where the wood fibers run parallel to the plane of the cut. This orientation is generally stronger and more stable than end grain, and it accepts finishes and adhesives more readily. Most woodworking operations, such as planing and jointing, are performed along the long-grain to achieve smooth results.
