Longitudinal

Describing an orientation or direction that runs parallel to the main axis or length of an object. In railway engineering, a longitudinal force acts along the direction of the track, such as braking or acceleration forces on a railcar. A longitudinal sleeper is laid parallel to the rails, unlike the more common transverse sleeper.
