Rail anchor

A steel clip or fastener attached to the base of a rail and pressed against the side of a crosstie or sleeper. Its purpose is to prevent longitudinal movement of the rail, known as rail creep, which is caused by thermal expansion, braking forces, and traffic patterns. Rail anchors are installed in specific patterns, such as every other tie or every third tie, depending on track conditions and expected forces.
