Tie plate

A flat, rectangular steel plate placed between the rail and the railway tie (sleeper) to distribute the load from the rail over a wider area of the tie. This component protects the tie from wear and crushing, and also provides a consistent bearing surface for the rail. Tie plates are typically secured to the tie with spikes or screws and feature shoulders that hold the rail in gauge.
