Cross-tie

A rectangular support member laid perpendicular to the rails in a railway track, holding them at a fixed distance apart. These components, also known as sleepers, distribute the load from the rails to the ballast and subgrade. They are typically made of wood, concrete, or steel, with concrete ties having a longer lifespan.
