Permanent way

The complete track structure of a railway, including the rails, fasteners, sleepers (ties), and ballast or slab track foundation. It provides the surface upon which rolling stock operates and is designed to support and distribute the loads from passing trains. The term distinguishes the finished, long-term track from the temporary lines laid by contractors during construction.
