Railroad tie

A rectangular support member, typically made of wood, concrete, or steel, laid perpendicular to the railway tracks to hold the rails at a fixed distance apart. Ties distribute the load from the rails to the ballast and underlying subgrade. They are also known as sleepers in many parts of the world.
