Tamping machine

A self-propelled machine used in railway maintenance to pack the track ballast under railway ties, also known as sleepers. It lifts the track and uses vibrating tamping tines to compact the ballast, correcting the vertical and horizontal alignment of the rails for safe and smooth train operation. The machine's work corrects alignment deviations to within a few millimeters of the design specifications.
