Tamper
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-005866
A self-propelled, on-track machine that packs ballast under railway sleepers to correct the vertical and horizontal alignment of the track. Hydraulically powered tamping tines vibrate and penetrate the ballast on both sides of the sleeper, then squeeze together to compact the stone underneath it. Modern tampers are often integrated with dynamic track stabilizers and can correct alignment to sub-millimeter tolerances, guided by laser or inertial measurement systems.
