Blanketing
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-000595
A layer of selected granular material, such as sand or crushed stone, placed between the track ballast and the underlying subgrade formation. It serves to distribute the train load, prevent the upward migration of fine soil particles into the ballast, and provide a drainage path for water away from the track structure. The thickness of the blanket layer is determined by the subgrade soil type and anticipated traffic loads, with depths ranging from 300 to 600 millimeters on main lines.
