Laitance

A weak, chalky layer of fine particles that forms on the surface of freshly placed concrete or mortar due to the upward movement of bleed water. This layer consists of cement and aggregate fines, reducing the bond strength of subsequent layers or surface treatments. Laitance must be removed by mechanical means before applying finishes or additional concrete.
