Initial setting time

The time from first contact between cement and mixing water until the paste has stiffened enough to start losing plasticity, determined with the Vicat needle penetration test. Concrete or mortar must be mixed, placed, and finished before this point. ASTM C150 requires an initial set of at least 45 minutes for Portland cement, while the Indian standard IS 269 sets the minimum at 30 minutes.
