Bastard type
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-006785
A size of metal printing type that does not conform to the standard point system increments, having a body size that falls between two regular sizes. For example, a 9.5-point type would be considered a bastard size because it is between the standard 9-point and 10-point bodies. Such type requires special spacing material, known as leads and slugs, to be justified properly within a column of standard-sized text, complicating the hand-composition process.
