To sew long, loose, temporary stitches in fabric to hold pieces together before the final, permanent sewing is done. This process holds seams, hems, or other components in place for fitting, pressing, or complex machine stitching operations. Basting stitches are made with a contrasting color thread for easy visibility and are removed once the permanent seam is completed.
