A temporary stitch or series of stitches used to hold fabric pieces together before permanent sewing, or to secure elements like facings, linings, or interlinings in place. Tacking stitches are often loose and easily removable, serving as a guide for machine stitching or to maintain the shape of a garment during construction. This technique is distinct from permanent seams, which are designed for durability.
