Basting

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-000458

To sew long, loose, temporary stitches to hold fabric pieces together before the final, permanent seam is sewn. This process holds layers of fabric in place, marks guidelines, or attaches elements like zippers and pockets for a fitting or for precise machine sewing. Basting stitches are made with a contrasting thread color for easy visibility and are designed to be removed quickly without damaging the fabric once the final stitching is complete.
