Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-000496
To sail against the wind by making a series of tacks, alternating the boat's direction relative to the wind. This maneuver allows a sailing vessel to progress upwind by sailing at an angle to the wind, rather than directly into it. Each leg of the beat is called a tack, and the boat changes direction by performing a tacking maneuver.
