Beartrap

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-000495

A police speed trap in which an officer waits with a radar or laser speed gun to catch speeding motorists. The word comes from citizens band radio slang, where police are called bears, and drivers used it to warn each other over the radio so they could slow down. Beartrap is also the name of a Canadian-developed device that hauls helicopters onto ship decks, an unrelated naval sense.
