Jaunty

Royal Navy slang for the master-at-arms, the senior rating in charge of discipline, order, and police duties aboard a ship, with the regulating staff working under him. The nickname is also spelled jonty and belongs to lower-deck speech rather than being a formal rank title. The same word in everyday English is an adjective meaning cheerful or stylish.
