Fore-overman

A colliery supervisor in charge of the overmen, a title used in the Durham and Northumberland coalfields. The fore-overman supervised the underground work of the fore-shift, the first working shift of the day, and the back-overman who took charge of the later shift was subordinate to him. The title is recorded in print from at least 1849.
