Ground bailiff

A superintendent of mines, the official who oversees the workings and the men employed in them. The title is recorded in mid-nineteenth-century trade references and in colliery accident reports of the same period. In an 1862 report on the Bradley colliery accident, one man is described as both ground bailiff and colliery manager.
