Bailiff

An overseer or manager of a mine, particularly in the historic tin mining districts of Cornwall and Devon in England. The bailiff was responsible for the day-to-day surface operations, including managing workers, keeping accounts, and overseeing the dressing of ore after it was brought up from underground. This role was distinct from the mine captain, who supervised the underground work.
