Helper-up
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-002814
A locomotive, also known as a pusher engine or banker, temporarily added to the rear of a heavy train to provide extra tractive effort for ascending a steep grade. In industrial rail operations, such as those serving mines or quarries, helper-up engines assist trains hauling bulk commodities like coal or ore over challenging terrain. Once the train reaches the summit of the grade, the helper engine detaches and returns to the bottom to await the next train.
