Headsman

A mine worker responsible for supervising the loading and unloading of cages or skips at the top of a mine shaft, an area known as the bank or shaft collar. This individual communicates with the hoist operator and the workers at the bottom of the shaft (the onsetter) to coordinate the movement of personnel, materials, and mined ore. The headsman directs the flow of mine cars to and from the cage and is accountable for safe operations at the surface.
