Beech snap

Breakage of the main stem of a mature beech tree, typically partway up the trunk, caused by decay in wood weakened by beech bark disease. Whole crowns or large limbs can fall in moderate wind, even before the tree looks obviously dying. It is a hazard to loggers and landowners working in beech stands.
