Brakeman

A mine worker who rides along on trips of cars hauled underground by a locomotive or cable, throwing track switches and coupling and uncoupling cars. The brakeman also opens and closes ventilation doors along the route and signals the motorman to start or stop the train. Other names for the job include car rider, rope rider, and tail-end rider.
