Brakepipe
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-000744
The main pipe running the length of a railway train that connects the locomotive's air brake controls to the braking equipment on each car. This pipe is charged with compressed air to keep the brakes released. A reduction in brakepipe pressure, whether initiated by the driver or caused by a train separation, triggers the application of the brakes on all connected vehicles.
