Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-006812
A railroad or main line that mainly links one major carrier to another, handling through freight received in interchange and delivered onward, with little traffic starting or ending along its own length. The Nickel Plate Road, which hauled freight between Chicago and Buffalo, is a classic American example. Such a route earns most of its revenue from overhead traffic rather than from local shippers.
