Broadcast storm

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-000783

An abnormal, high-volume flood of broadcast or multicast packets on a computer network that consumes an excessive amount of network bandwidth and processing resources. This condition degrades network performance and may cause a complete network failure as devices become overwhelmed trying to process every incoming packet. A broadcast storm is frequently caused by a switching loop in a network topology, where frames are forwarded endlessly between interconnected switches.
