Capstan
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-006836
A rotating spindle or shaft used to pull magnetic tape, wire, or other media at a constant speed. The medium is pressed against the turning capstan by a rubber pinch roller, and the resulting friction draws it forward smoothly past a read/write head or processing station. The precision of the capstan's rotation speed determines the accuracy of data recording and playback.
