Write once

Describing a type of data storage media that allows information to be recorded a single time and prevents any subsequent erasure or modification. This characteristic is inherent to the physical or chemical properties of the medium, such as the dye layer in a CD-R or the fuses in a programmable read-only memory (PROM) chip. WORM (Write Once, Read Many) technology is used for permanent data archiving and record-keeping where data immutability is required by regulation.
